Lake Illawarra Projects

Wollongong Council are offering an opportunity for users of the lake and its surrounds to take part in a program that will give participants an understanding of the lake ecology. Participants can then put forward a project to help protect Lake Illawarra and make it a sustainable area for recreation. At the end, one outstanding project will receive six months of one-on-one mentorship to help make it happen.

Trudy Costa, the Coastal Environment Officer, said in her email:

Applications are now open to take part in the first ever Marine Estate Champions program – and we’d love for you to apply.

This free three-month program, delivered in collaboration with the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, Wollongong City Council and Shellharbour City Council, is designed for locals who care about Lake Illawarra and want to turn that passion into action.

Running from March to May 2026, the program includes:

  • Four evening workshops exploring Lake Illawarra’s ecology, dynamics, challenges and opportunities – plus the threats and benefits of the marine estate and how we can help protect it
  • An inspiring catchment-to-coast field trip with local experts
  • A celebratory graduation event where you’ll pitch your project idea

Along the way, you’ll discover how the NSW marine estate works – from estuary dynamics to local threats and solutions – while building confidence in community advocacy and storytelling. You’ll also develop practical skills in project planning, campaign strategy, grant writing and public speaking, leaving you ready to launch your own idea with impact.

And here’s the exciting part – one outstanding project will receive six months of one-on-one mentorship to help make it happen.

Your backyard is part of the marine estate – and everyone has a role to play. Join a growing movement for positive change and help create lasting impact for Lake Illawarra. Places are limited, and selection is through an Expression of Interest process.

Applications are now open and close 19 December 2025
